SOMA - Society of Blessed Mother Angela |
SOMA is a means of sharing the charism of Mother Angela with the students of Ladywood High School. Members of SOMA have dedicated themselves to carrying out the Christian values of our faith, serving the poor and needy of the community and supporting one another through prayer and service. We participate in a wide variety of community service projects, whether as individuals or as a group. From planting trees, serving food to homeless people downtown, and visiting elderly sisters at Angela Hall, SOMA members are involved throughout community. We also try to make fellow students aware of volunteer opportunities.
Any Ladywood student from grades 9-12
The activities include getting involved in:
• Organize the Lenten Operation Rice Bowl for the Ladywood community.
• Making sandwiches and distributing them on Saturdays with the PBJ outreach at Our Lady of Good Counsel parish. Sandwiches are made at OLGC and distributed in the Cass Corridor section of Detroit.
• Tutoring at St. Vincent de Paul Sarah Fisher center twice a week - at risk population.
SOMA came into existence in October 1992. The club was established to promote the ideals of Mother Mary Angela Truszkowska, Foundress of the Felician Sisters. In 1992, Mother Angela was declared "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II. Blessed Angela worked among the poor in Poland, provided shelter for children and adults, and educated the less fortunate.
Meetings are monthly after school.
